Brew Time

First, CafeX is a very sweet coffee with a slight strawberry aroma. For this coffee, I decided to start with a V60 pour-over made with my Hario V60. I chose this based on the aroma and thought it was best to try first, and I was correct, as the V60 provided a clear profile for the floral notes to shine, such as strawberry and raspberry.

Next I tried the coffee in a standard Aeropress with the recipe of 13 grams to 200 mL of water at 2 minutes brew time. This enhanced the tea-like flavours and provided a spicy finish, e.g., nutmeg, as suggested by the taste notes.

To get a wider image of this coffee, I did try it in a flat white and espresso, but the milk made the coffee lose its complex flavour, and it fell flat. The espresso was better, but the flavour was significantly reduced.

Clifton's History

Founded in 2001 by James Fisher, Clifton started business as an espresso machine technician company, servicing machines around Bristol. After a few years they expanded into coffee roasting and barista training, which was uncommon for the time.

In recent years their HQ has enlarged to a massive size to accommodate their training facilities and coffee roasters, while still being based in West Bristol.

Conclusion

To summarise, CafeX is a complex coffee that works best in a pour-over or V60. I really enjoyed this coffee and will be using Clifton Coffee Roasters again.

For a well-priced coffee (£36.00 per kg), CafeX is excellent and excels as a basic coffee. If you are looking to try some new brew methods or just getting into brewing V60 or Aeropress, this coffee is the place to start.
